In September it was providing late for farm labourers to work late gathering the harvest after sunset so it was named for harvest rather than hunting. The Hunter’s Moon comes a month after the Harvest Moon which like the Hunter’s Moon rises very soon after sunset and appears red or orange. ![]() That’s because of the well documented moon illusion which tricks our brains into thinking the moon bigger because it’s closer to the horizon. It’s hard to notice the moon being bigger even though it’s nearer.īut when it’s close to the horizon it looks bigger, whether it’s a super moon or not. The moon goes round the earth but not quite in a circle so sometimes it’s closer than others. Sunday’s moon is also a supermoon because it’s closer to earth than usual. The atmosphere scatters blue light but allows red light through to our eyes. The orange hue is because when you gaze at the horizon to watch the sunset and low moon, you are looking through a thicker layer of atmosphere than if you are looking straight up. The Hunter’s Moon looks orange or red as it rises but goes back to the normal colour when it’s high in the sky. Think you know your star sign? It was named for hunters because it provided light for spotting prey as the sunlight faded.
